In 1993 I completed my PhD research on the writings of Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967), which was later published in an British and American trade edition: Siegfried Sassoon: Scorched Glory (Macmillan/St Martin’s Press, 1997). In true Sassoon-fashion I had ‘stumbled’ (‘stumbling’ and ‘blundering’ are recurring words in Sassoon’s war writings) across his Sherston-trilogy in my first year at Amsterdam University. It led me to his war poetry, to other war poets, and to that whole historical & socio-cultural phenomenon: the Great War and its impact on British society.
It made me wonder what had happened in my own native country, the Netherlands, at the time. I knew it had remained neutral, but at school we had never been told anything about the period, and it seemed to me that in a country that was so near the battlefields of the Western Front and so close to two of the main warring nations, Britain and Germany, the war could hardly have passed unnoticed.

Presentation DVD Buiten Schot by Diederik van Vleuten
In een uitverkochte Kleine Komedie is zondag 9 november j.l. de DVD van Buiten Schot gepresenteerd. Een en ander vond plaats direct na afloop van de Grote Oorlog, de voorstelling waarmee Diederik samen met Ivo Janssen deze maand langs de Nederlandse theaters reist.
Het eerst exemplaar was bestemd voor Paul Moeyes, schrijver van het boek Buiten Schot, het standaardwerk over Nederland en de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Diederik ontleende de titel van zijn tweede soloprogramma aan dit boek. De presentatie van het eerste exemplaar aan Paul Moeyes betrof een wederdienst. Eerder dit jaar had Diederik uit handen van Paul al het eerste exemplaar van de derde druk van Paul's meesterwerk mogen ontvangen. Zo houdt men de bal in de ploeg. Omdat er geen fotograaf aanwezig was reikte het publiek van de Kleine Komedie via smartphones de helpende hand. Dank Aline Visser voor deze foto. It was 100 years ago this summer that the world was schocked by the outbreak of the First World War. A nice opportunity for magazine Historiek to interview historian and Anglicist Paul Moeyes. Earlier this year the Arbeiderspers published his renewed and extended edition of his book Buiten schot.
